This was my first foray into the work by Shirley Jackson, but I'd definitely like to read more.

Her narration is both innocent and childlike, and disturbing, packed with violent imagery.

No one is truly innocent here - with the possible exception of Uncle Julian and Constance (who took the rap for the murders in the first place).

We have always lived in Shirley Jackson's castle, whether we knew it or not.

It takes a while to piece together what is going on in"We have always lived in the castle",and the clues are gradual. Bought as a holiday read & couldn't put it down, I loved Merricat from the first page & Shirley Jackson (a fascinating person in her own right) brought to life her characters & their settings with such captivation. The narrator, Merricat, is the youngest surviving descendent of an ancient family, most of whom were killed by poisoning several years before the novel is set. This book is not a horror novel.

With all the charm and tripping lightness of a fairy dance, Shirley Jackson lures the unsuspecting reader through an enchanted garden into a world of insanity, witchery and murder.

Three people live here (though once there were more) protected not just by the fence that surrounds the grounds, but by the buried charms and magical words that Merricat, our narrator, uses to keep the world out.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 28, 2020 She now lives with her elder sister Constance and ill uncle Julian in the remains of the Blackwood family home.

She first received wide critical acclaim for her short story “The Lottery,” which was published in 1949. The irony of this is that Merricat herself is responsible for every bad or frightening thing that befalls the household.

If I Am Missing or Dead: A Sister's Story of Love, Murder, and Liberation Oh my! This is a chillingly wonderful short book, at one and the same time mordantly funny, satisfyingly weird, and quite disturbing

Yes, i liked Merricat right from the start. Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote.

She was such an interesting person and I loved her dark side.
It's tragic the things that sometimes pass us by. Merricat and Constance, driven outdoors, are encircled by some of the villagers who seem on the verge of attacking them, en masse. I’m usually a fast reader, but this started to feel like drudgery. The theme of persecution of people who exhibit "otherness" or become outsiders in small-town All of Jackson's work creates an atmosphere of strangeness and contact with what Lethem calls "a vast intimacy with everyday evil..." and how that intimacy affects "a village, a family, a self".

I've never read a horror novel before, and after reading this I can say I still haven't.

The pipe sets fire to the family home. I had the wonderful Penguin Modern classics edition with an endnote by Joyce Carol Oates which helped me get my head round the strange, unnerving character of Merricat who seems part-witch, part-sociopath in the story. It is 146 pages of silly and pointless descriptions of what everyone’s going to eat and clean.

While Merricat and Constance shelter for the night under a tree Merricat has made into a hideaway, Constance confesses for the first time that she always knew Merricat poisoned the family. Please try again.

I don’t usually do Halloween reads, and wow, just look at that cover!

What I also believe Jackson can accomplish so impeccably in her writing---and through her characters and their situations—is leaving an element of subjectivity and the “unknown” within.

I originally downloaded this book because the title caught my eye (I love castles!)

We are reeled into the twisted mind of the anti-heroine as if against our will, feeling sorry for her yet appalled at the same time.
