I say amazing because I simply cannot imagine an American made-for-TV production equaling this British effort. Probably my favorite version of the Holmes novel. Perhaps not. The rest of the cast are pretty competent. 19 out of 22 found this helpful. These are the acting highlights: Martin Shaw as the young American Baskerville heir seems to be thrusting his way through on sheer goodwill--he is likable enough that you wish that for his own sake, Sir Henry would heed the many warning signs, head back to London and take acting lessons. I don't understand why so many people liked the Granada version. Shot on bleakly beautiful Devonshire locations, with the fine cinematography taking full advantage of the gleaming pools in the "Grimpen Mire," it's definitely the best-looking version of all. The two men who portrayed him in the Jeremy Brett episodes captured him so much better. Donald Churchill is fine as Watson, though David Healy in Sign of Four opposite Richardson is better. I am not sure what Ronald Lacey and Brian Blessed are doing in the movie but Ronald Lacey (one of my favourite actors) is pretty amusing and brings a welcome bit of light relief to a pretty dour movie. Of all the Hound renditions, this one is probably the most precise, and yet it still has to play with Conan-Doyle's wonderful plot. 5 out of 6 found this helpful. A treat to see in movie are RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK actors Denholm Elliot as Dr. Mortimer and Ronald Lacey as Inspector Lestrade, who was not in the novel, but a nice addition. Also, they couldn't resist the sappy ending, with Sir Henry and Beryl immediately joining hands. He is always lurking just offstage, but in this 1983 production we especially miss, for an awful lot of the film, the marvelous voice and presence of Ian Richardson. With its genuine suspense, interesting storyline and beautiful soundtrack there isn't a dull moment in this film. 9 out of 10. 3 out of 3 found this helpful. Taken as a whole, it's just a little better. 11 out of 14 found this helpful. This production of Doyle The Hound of the Baskervilles was the second multi-part BBC adaptation, following Peter Cushing's two-part episode for the 1968 television series. The scene of Sir Hugo in the swamp with his captive -- well, let's just say you won't be sorry to see him get eaten by a devil dog. Hired by a young lady, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson investigate the strange recent deaths of her missing father's friends from the army, as well as the whereabouts of the Great Mogul, the second-largest diamond in the world.

The sir Hugo scene with the girl in the swamp, and the horse being in death agony is memorable. Most of the plot elements are in place, but they had to misuse characters such as Laura Lyons and create an abusive husband, an artist living in the area. You get the usual irritating plot changes and extra characters thrown in but overall they keep to the original story pretty well. Ranking this one a point above Rathbone and Brett's versions. Firstly, Ian Richardson as Holmes: he is a different Holmes to Conan Doyle's cold, aloof deduction machine. The Hound of the Baskervilles is, of course, the Sherlock Holmes mystery where Holmes goes undercover for the whole middle part. All in all a pretty good attempt at a classic, not the best but certainly not the worst.

Large black, and glowing, definitely closer to the description in the book than probably any other movie has gotten. She seems to come from the quivering lip school of acting.

I liked Ian Richardson better here than in the same year's THE SIGN OF FOUR – perhaps because his tendency to go over-the-top gets channeled this time around through Holmes' own penchant for disguise! The disappearance of a young woman's father and a mysterious note years later after the strange regular annual delivery of valuable pearls to her puts Sherlock Holmes on the case. The mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville is blamed on a longstanding curse that has followed the Baskerville family for two hundred years. The telling of the legend in the beginning is excellently done, by the way and leaves nothing to wish for. You must be a registered user to use the IMDb rating plugin. An insipid and clueless Inspector LeStrade is added for no other reason, apparently, than the writer's feeling that a Holmes story needed him. Was this review helpful?
